Background of the Study
Livestock production is a key component of agricultural systems in many parts of Nigeria, including Paikoro Local Government Area (LGA) in Niger State. The area has a strong tradition of cattle, sheep, and goat farming, which forms the basis of many households' livelihoods. However, livestock production in Paikoro faces various challenges influenced by geopolitical factors such as land ownership disputes, grazing routes, environmental factors, and local governance. This study seeks to explore how geopolitical elements—such as regional politics, land tenure systems, and inter-communal conflicts—affect livestock production in Paikoro LGA.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Livestock farming in Paikoro LGA faces growing challenges related to competition over grazing lands, political tensions over land use policies, and the impact of climate change. These issues are compounded by geopolitical factors such as cross-border trade policies and the fluctuating support from local governments. The migration of herders across state lines and the increasing frequency of violent conflicts between herders and farmers further exacerbate the situation.
